Psi State History
Psi State was officially organized on November 28, 1936. Miss Mamie Sue Bastian, Society founder, traveled to Atlanta to preside over the historic event held at the Henry Grady Hotel. There she met the fourteen Psi State Founders: Mrs. Josephine Baggott, Mrs. Margaret Harris Blair, Miss Elise Boylston, Mrs. Ruth Weegand Davis, Miss Melville Doughty, Miss Dorothy Haines, Miss Ethel Massengale, Mrs. Nancy Porter, Miss Josie Slocumb, Miss Charlotte Gage Smith, Miss Margaret Soloman, Miss May Taylor, and Mrs. Eva L. Thornton. The first president of Psi State was Mrs. Eva L. Thornton.
Psi State history cites the many accomplishments of our members including past Southeast Regional Directors Mrs. Evelyn Dean Ford, Mrs. Mavis Johnson and Dr. LeAnna Walton; International Achievement Award Recipients Miss Eva Gardner and Dr. Mildred English; and former International Board of Trustees members Mrs. Evelyn Dean Ford, Mrs. Blanche Threatte and Mrs. Josephine Hicks.
Psi State’s history also boosts of opportunities to host DKG events that include the 1982 International Convention, Atlanta, (Miss Malissa Cox, Chairman); the 1973 Southeast Regional Conference , Atlanta, (Mrs. Evelyn Dean Ford, Chairman); and the 1997 Southeast Regional Conference, Atlanta, (Mrs. Jean Barber, Chairman). History will be made again when we host the 2015 Southeast Regional Conference!
In 1987, the estate of Miss Elise Boylston, Psi State Founder, gifted Psi State with the Boylston House. This house served as the official Psi State Headquarters until 2006 when members voted to sell the property. Under the capable leadership of Mrs. Josephine Hicks, the home and its contents sold for $529,000, and The Elise Boylston Memorial Foundation was organized on June 4, 2007. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide funds to conduct educational research, to develop special projects related to the improvement of education principally in Georgia, and to promote professional growth in education. During the 2007-2009 biennium, the Foundation, under the chairmanship of Mrs. Mavis Johnson, awarded more than $26,000 in grants! What a beautiful tribute to one of our founders!
Today’s Psi State members are working “hand in hand” to carry OUR VISION and OUR MISSION into the future, thus insuring many more history-making achievements. Here’s to our next 75 years…
